dissected by time and space / by Hannah Gason

We recently visited Strathnairn Arts for the first time, on a beautiful sunny day.  Besides being a wonderful place to visit, we also enjoyed the exhibition of "sculptural landscapes" by Michael Winters.  I was blown away by his exciting works, which consist of landscapes combined with complex walled constructions.  The exhibition runs from 15 August to 7 September 2014.

Michael Winters - Landscape With Incisions & the Space Beyond (2.3 m x 1.3 m).

Since the Apollo missions to the moon in the Sixties, I have pondered, as an artist, how I could combine both the earth bound landscape and the elements of time and space into the one work. This was a challenge and the idea to create “Sculptural Landscapes” gave me the means to combine the elements of the earth bound landscape and time and space.
The works are very three dimensional and the landscape is very clearly defined, however, it is cut open and punctured revealing layers underneath. These layers are to be read as cosmic space penetrating the landscape and enveloping it.
